Mission
Statement
The mission
of Making Friends is to build better understanding between people
and dogs and to promote dog training using positive reinforcement.
I started training my own dogs in 1973. I trained my first dog
with jerks on a choke collar to be obedient and win AKC obedience
titles. I was very successful. Then I decided that the amount
of discomfort I was causing my dogs to earn obedience titles
was not ethical. I knew I had to find a better way, and I did.
If killer whales at SeaWorld could be trained with food rewards,
then so could dogs. Positive reinforcement training is the better
way!
After years
of teaching classes through dog clubs and adult education programs,
I built my own dog training school in 1987 to continue to pursue
my goals. Then, in 1991, I was thrilled to be able to be able
to share my knowledge with more people by writing the first
edition of Making Friends.
Now I am
excited to be able to update Making Friends. I hope this
paperback will make my message of building a good relationship
with your dog available to many people. Watch for it in October
2004!
I am now
retired from teaching classes. I teach a limited number of private
lessons, mostly to students who have been with me for years.
I enjoy giving seminars, and I love training and showing my
own dog.
I wish
every dog owner a wonderful relationship with their dog based
on mutual understanding, good communication, positive training
and love.
